My heart has always been in musical theatre, but I have worked extensively in all media of the profession. My first film as an actress was a six month contract on the film “To Sir With Love” starring Sidney Poitier and me of course. That led to a three year contract with the BBC as a presenter on children’s programmes.
For a bet I went to an audition at the BBC, hoping to join the dance company ‘The Young Generation’. I made it! We had our own TV series and performed in Royal Variety productions for the Royal Family.
A golden chance came my way in the 80’s to fly to New Zealand and assist the choreographer in a TV production starring Gene Kelly and the New Zealand ballet company. Of course I said yes. On returning from New Zealand, I choreographed the Children’s Royal Variety and staged the Royal Variety staring many celebrities which was a great honour.
I then directed various live charity shows nationwide including the West End for members of the Royal Family.
Because I have had at least 40 years in the business I am moving forward swiftly so as not to bore you all.
Because I loved dance and acting my experience led me to choreographing and directing musical theatre productions. Some being Sondheim, Grease, Half a Sixpence, West Side Story and every popular pantomime subject.
One of my best memories was directing Snow White with Ariana Grande playing of course Snow White. It is amazing to see how her career has soared. I guess everyone has seen the movie version of “Wicked”. What a wonderful piece of cinema that is! Talking of careers, I have also directed Sabrina Carpenter in Peter Pan in 2015 and now she is selling out arenas worldwide. I have also had the pleasure of Sir Cliff Richard playing the role of the “Magic Mirror”.
A new TV series for channel E4 was offered to me as a judge to advise young hopefuls on performance and creativity.
During the 90’s I worked for Simon Fuller searching for young talent to form a group called “S Club Juniors.”
Following this project, I flew to the United States to search for “Junior American Idol” performers and then also became a producer on “American Idol”.
On a warm balmy evening in Mexico, Simon Fuller, Nigel Lythgoe, and myself discussed the creation of a new series ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and Fox loved the idea and project.
I was the Audition judge for three USA series of “So You Think You Can Dance” and then I was asked to judge in Australia. It changed my life as I loved the Series and the talented dancers. In a way that is why I love DWC as I am still judging talent.
For my sins, I was asked to do ”I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here” for Australia in South Africa. Now that’s another story but a challenge you wouldn’t believe! My work in Australia was extensive from being a presenter on morning shows to bringing panto to all across Australia.
Panto became a huge success and I have my own company ’Bonnie Lythgoe Productions’ of which I am very proud.
Today, 2025, I am involved in the development of a new stage production of the 80’s film “Beaches” and bringing it to the theatres worldwide along with my continuing projects of TV and panto in Australia and USA.
To succeed in life, you need a backbone, a wishbone and a funny bone.
